How are Pot holes formed?

Potholes occur when moisture penetrates cracks in the asphalt surface of a road or driveway. Cold weather freezes the water and causes it to expand. A pothole forms when dirt and gravel are forced out leaving a hole. The ice eventually melts and the stressed asphalt becomes a pot hole.

What is the solution?

Henderson and Taylor (Public Works) Limited provide a permanent solution.

To permanently repair a pot hole, we saw cut an edge around the pothole, this provides the asphalt with an edge to be rolled against, preventing the tarmac from spreading out of the hole. If a pothole is just filled and compacted, unsurprisingly the asphalt comes out and the same pot hole reappears six months later.

The saw cut area is then filled with 6 or 10mm DBM (Dense Bit Mac) Asphalt, and compacted with a wacker plate or a pedestrian roller, depending on the size or frequency of pot holes in the area.

Spending a little more on getting a Pot Hole properly repaired is much more cost effective in the long run, as this solution lasts. We undertake Pot Hole repair throughout Essex, Kent and London.
